HOPE CAME THROUGH WITH FLYING COLORS!
   from Cynthia Branigan
"Flying Colors" was the pronouncement of the veterinary surgeon about the Greyhound named Last Hope, the girl with a potentially life-threatening heart murmur. But during her consultations with specialists, she did beautifully and we have nothing more to worry about.
Both the cardiologist and the surgeon agree that the little girl with big ears should live a long and healthy life.
We were sleepless the night before her procedure, worrying about what might lay ahead. But Hope herself was never worried.

In fact, of greatest interest to her was the array of tiny dogs parading around the veterinary hospital's lobby, tantalizingly beyond her reach.
Here's a photo of Hope on alert in the waiting room with her foster, Allan (left); and Charles holding Eugene, left, and Yvette, right.
And there's Hope being led into the hospital for her procedures.
Hope's ability to see specialists owes everything to your financial aid and to the good vibes you sent her way. Together, we made it happen!
You have my deepest appreciation.

BUY A BOOK, HELP A GREYHOUND!
Cynthia Branigan's third book, THE LAST DIVING HORSE IN AMERICA, officially hit the shelves October 19th, 2021.
The book has already received much pre-publication praise such as a "moving love letter to rescued animals" (Publishers Weekly) and "inspiring, illuminating" (Jersey's Best).
Her memoir describes how the author and the horse, who performed for years on Atlantic City's Steel Pier before being cruelly discarded, were profoundly transformed by each other. Her experiences with the horse, named Gamal, led her to devote her life to finding homes for animals of all kinds.
In a special offer, Branigan will donate the net proceeds from any books sold through the Make Peace With Animals' website; Facebook; or by mail, to her favorite charity, Make Peace with Animals. In addition, she will sign, or sign and inscribe the book--your choice.

GREYHOUND ADOPTION UPDATE
       from Cynthia Branigan
  • There is a chronic shortage of cat friendly Greyhounds. Recently, one adoption coordinator cat-tested 20 Greyhounds and only 2 were what she considered cat-workable. We always re-test when we get the dogs. Some show us immediately that they are not cat- or small-dog friendly. Others seem like they might be good. When their status is in doubt, we always re-test them once they are settled in foster care.
  • Because there are so few cat friendly Greyhounds to go around, we will only place them in homes with cats or very small dogs.
  • A dog's color is immaterial. I wrote that in the first edition of Adopting the Racing Greyhound way back in 1992, and it still applies today. Incredibly, though, just the other day someone specified what color they wanted. As the saying goes: love is color blind (or should be).
  • Consider the seniors. As time goes on, we'll be getting more former broods, and even a few former stud dogs. Please don't overlook these hard-working hounds who continued to produce for their owners even after their racing careers were over. The least we can do is give them a soft bed in front of the fire for their efforts.

                                                   ROGER MEETS HIS MATCH

Roger Penske (left), son of the late, great, Lassinagh Silky and prolific sire Flying Penske, goes nose to toes with his Mini Me. This paper mache statue, made by Vermont artist Terri Malloy, is the spittin' image of Roger. And why not? He was the model! The piece was created and donated to commemorate Make Peace With Animals'  25th Annual Homecoming. Luckily for Roger, his adopter had the winning bid at the silent auction.
